Q&A with Tim Sheldon, D - Ninth District

Newark, Del. —Councilman Tim Sheldon, who was first elected to County Council in 2004, represents the Ninth District. The Ninth District encompasses areas of Pike Creek and Newark, and as a result of redistricting, now includes Marshallton, Hickory Hills, Hickory Woods, and Middle Run Valley.
He is running for re-election of the Ninth District, and is currently unopposed.
Q What issues do you think are the most important to the people in your district?
A This is simple: Taxes, public safety, and land use issues.
Q How would your campaign strategy change if a candidate decided to run against you?
A I’m a worker. I have been running as a general election all along. I’ve been going to civic meetings and sitting in the back.
Q Why did you decide not to run for New Castle County President?
A I still have outstanding issues in the Ninth District. USA Today ranked the Pike Creek Valley as the 79th best place to live (in the entire United States) — I want to keep it that way. State Representative Joe Miro (R) said that I was the individual who saved the Pike Creek Golf Course. I couldn’t serve the Ninth District 100 percent if I ran for Council President.
Q What have been your greatest accomplishments on Council thus far?
A First, I would say saving Pike Creek (from a housing development proposed on the Three Little Bakers Golf Course.) I am also proud of the $17 million flooding ordinance that has decreased the amount of flooding we see. I also drafted the False Alarm Ordinance, giving police more time to concentrate on crime while generating revenue. As a result of the False Alarm Ordinance, they have dropped from 14,163 in one year down to 6,123, allowing for more police on the street.
